Two Moors Way

Dartmoor, on the Two Moors Way

The Two Moors Way connects Ivybridge and Lynmouth, a distance of 103 miles. However, since 2005 the Two Moors Way has been combined with the Erme–Plym Trail from Wembury to Ivybridge, a distance of 15 miles, to make a 118-mile Devon coast to coast path. Thus together, the Two Moors Way and Erme–Plym Trail connect to the South West Coastal Path at Wembury and Lynmouth.

The following information assumes the walker begins at Wembury. Those starting at Ivybridge can merely do a simple bit of mileage subtraction from the table.

Although not on the path, we have included Lynton because of its close proximity to Lynmouth, and because it has a Youth Hostel and camping. It also has easier access to some rail stations.

Note that whereas the Two Moors Way is marked as such on OS maps, the Erme – Plym Trail is only shown as ordinary footpaths.

Accommodation

We have split accommodation into Hotels & Inns and Bed & Breakfast. Guest Houses are included with Bed & Breakfast, and while we realise many of them are as good as some hotel accommodation, in order to avoid confusion we have opted for the simpler option.

Restaurants and Pubs

We have attempted to give as much information as possible, especially if pubs serve real ale and/or food. But restaurants and pubs are notoriously changeable. Please let us know if our information is out of date.

Guidebooks and Maps

Two Moors Way GuidebookWe recommend buying two different guidebooks. No guidebook is perfect, and having two means one will supplement the other in terms of clarity, additional information, etc. The cost of the additional guidebook is very little compared to the cost of the walk.

Guidebooks

Two Moors Way: Devon’s Coast to Coast
By Devon County Council
Includes hand-drawn maps at a huge 1:18,000 scale based on Ordnance Survey maps, although very little non-route is shown. We highly recommend buying Ordnance Survey maps as well – the path is marked on the OS maps.
Unavailable through Amazon. We at Ramblefest will push Amazon to stock it. It is, however, available through the Two Moors Way Association (see below).

The Two Moors Way by John Macadam
(Aurum Press)
Unavailable through Amazon; we at Ramblefest will enquire if still in print, and if so will push Amazon to stock it.

The Two Moors Way: 100 miles across Dartmoor & Exmoor
By James Roberts
(Cicerone Guide)
Unavailable through Amazon; we at Ramblefest will enquire if still in print, and if so will push Amazon to stock it.

Maps

Two Moors Way MapsDo not feel tempted to save money buying the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey maps; they do not have anywhere near the same detail as the 1:25,000 scale maps, and do not show field boundaries.

The following Ordnance Survey `Explorer’ maps at 1:25,000 scale are required, in order from South to North, with the section of the route covered in parenthesis:

OL20 South Devon (Wembury to Crossways)
OL28 Dartmoor (Ivybridge to Hittisleigh)
113  Okehampton (Drewsteignton to Black Dog)
127 South Molton and Chudleigh
114  Exeter and the Exe Valley
OL9 Exmoor
