Notes on the Final Stage of the Pennine Way

This final section of the Pennine Way, Byrness to Kirk Yetholm, is known in polite circles as `a bastard’. The distance is 27 miles, and includes over 1600 metres of ascent.
However, there are ways and means of breaking the 27-mile walk into more comfortable mileages:

Option 1: Do not visit The Cheviot. This saves 2 miles and at least an hour in time. Perfectionists may insist the Pennine Way walker should visit The Cheviot, but in truth most Pennine Way walkers ignore it, and some refuse even to make eye contact with it.
Option 2: Rest the night in one of the two refuge huts and hope there is room.
Option 3: Descend to B&B accommodation part-way along the route, making up the height the next day. Some of the Kirk Yetholm accommodation offer a pick-up service.
