Notes on South West Coast Path Guidebooks:
We display above the guidebooks available for the route sequentially from Minehead to Poole, displaying first the National Trail Guidebooks, then the Trailblazer guides, then the Cicerone guidebook.
Note there are four National Trail guidebooks covering the route, but three Trailblazer guidebooks, and just the one Cicerone guidebook.
The National Trail Guidebooks include the relevant sections of the Ordnance Survey “Explorer” 1:25,000 scale maps.
The Trailblazer guidebooks include Wainwright-style 1:20,000 scale maps, and a great deal of information such as accommodation, camping, and where to eat and drink.
The Cicerone guidebook’s maps are at the 1:50,000 scale (although Cicerone also publish three map booklets which cover the route at 1:25,000 scale).
As usual, we advise buying two different guidebooks. The additional cost is small compared to the cost of the walk, and one guide will complement the other.
South West Coast Path Maps:
We display the AZ Adventure Atlas maps covering the route, which are at the same scale as OS “Explorer” maps.
Also included are the Cicerone map booklets which are also at a scale of 1:25,000; three of them cover the route.
Ordnance Survey provide the service of online maps, which you can use on all your devices. Costs around £20 – £25 per year for all maps across the UK for a year. Great value.

Below, we display examples of the recommended guidebooks:
South West Coast Path guidebook: Minehead to Padstow:
“This volume features the section of the Path from Minehead to Padstow, a distance of 163 miles (262 km). It skirts the Exmoor National Park, taking in the precipitous harbour towns of Lynton, Lynmouth and Ilfracombe, before heading south-west into Cornwall along the surfers’ coast via Westword Ho! and Arthurian Tintagel, to reach the gastronomic mecca of Padstow. Along the way there is the coastal path around Lundy Island, with its puffins, and other arresting wildlife from shearwaters to basking sharks.
This guide has been fully revised and updated for 2016, and completely resdesigned to feature many more colour photographs and much more information on local history, cultural associations and wildlife. It is not so much a walking guide as a complete companion to the landscape of the Path, whether you are a dedicated long-distance walker or a weekend stroller.”

South West Coast Path guidebook: Minehead to South Haven Point
“The South West Coast Path National Trail (SWCP) measures a staggering 630 miles (1015km) from Minehead on the Somerset coast right round Devon and Cornwall to Poole in Dorset.
The guidebook divides the route into 45 stages of between 12.5- 37.5km beginning and ending where amenities are available. No other stretch of coastline compares for scenic splendour, historical sites and availability of refreshments, accommodation and public transport, making it easy to split the South West Coast Path into week or weekend-long sections.
Written by prolific outdoor writer Paddy Dillon, this guidebook is packed with lots of information for planning your walk, including clear step-by-step route descriptions and OS map extracts, public transport links, accommodation and facilities along the way. Also described is the 17-mile South Dorset Ridgeway, from West Bexington to Osmington Mills, which can be used as a scenic way to shave 42 miles off the total distance. This epic route takes in Exmoor National Park, five Areas of Outstanding National Beauty and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, besides various nature reserves and SSSIs.”
