Pennine Way Public Transport — 2 Comments

  1. Marsden – Bus 184 from near by Peel Street stops right next to the Standedge part of the PW on the A62, this bus runs hourly Mon to Sat, it’s actual route is Huddersfield, Colne Valley along the A62 to Marsden then via Standedge Cutting to Diggle, Uppermill, Oldham and Manchester. Extra buses also run between Huddersfield and Marsden on routes 183 and 185 and Marsden is only a 35 to 45 min walk along Mount Road and paths off Mount Road to Standedge. You can also reach the PW walking up the track to Wessenden Reservior from the village.

Edale – No bus now, it was a pointless very bit part service anyway!

Gargrave – Bus 580 has finally been improved providing full size buses linking onto the 581 so buses now run Skipton, Gargrave, Settle, Ingleton to Kirby Lonsdale mostly hourly.

Bleaklow/Longendale – a very good but infrequent bus on Fridays now runs between Holmfirth and Glossop stopping at Torside, might be of use for those doing a shorter PW walk or those needing to access Glossop from the way on Fridays. It’s number is 351 and is usually a transit minibus. The Summer Weekend 951 along the same route might not run this year.

For full timetables of the 183/184/185 and 351 along with buses from Keighley to Haworth/Stanbury (500/664/665/917/918), and buses from Hebden Bridge up the hill to the PW at Colden (595) go to http://www.wymetro.com and click on buses then timetables. On the Metro PDF timetables section you can also find the Dalesbus timetable which has times of buses from Gargrave, Ribblehead/Horton, Keld etc but the best site for all Dales timetables is to go to http://www.dalesbus.org clicking on all year buses.

  2. You need to correct a couple of things, there are NO buses at Edale, they weren’t used so had to be withdrawn. Marsden has a bus link to the Pennine Way at Standedge, it’s the 184 on Oldham Road round the corner from Peel Street only 4 mins from the train station. This bus runs from Huddersfield to Manchester via Marsden and Oldham, runs hourly Mon to Sat and 2 hourly Sun’s, use it or loose it! Times at http://www.wymetro.com
