Although off route, we have included Great Ayton as it has accommodation and refreshment places. It also has a railway station. Those staying at Great Ayton overnight should leave the path at Captain Cook’s Monument [MAP]. The route can either be picked up again the following morning, or alternative paths taken from Great Ayton to Roseberry Topping (with the option of ascending it on the steeper side), and rejoining the CW at the top.

“Superb accommodation offered in a large detached house surrounded by just under an acre of beautiful gardens, including large sun-soaked patio, where you can enjoy a relaxed breakfast on those warm summer days we always have in this country! Extensive lawns, vegetable garden, and an orchard complete with eight lovely hens laying you a fresh egg for breakfast every day!
All bedrooms are spacious and beautifully furnished to a high standard and fully equipped with colour TV, tea and coffee making facilities, clock radios and washhand basins. The double en-suite has both bath and shower.
There is a large open driveway with ample off-road parking for four or five cars, and secure parking is available in a large lock-up garage for cycles and motorbikes.
Ideally situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Great Ayton, the boyhood home of the famous explorer Captain James Cook. Nestling just below Roseberry Topping, a local landmark, it’s an ideal stop off point for visitors following the Captain Cook Trail and for Cleveland Way walkers who are made very welcome. A packed lunch and pick-up service is provided, and drying / laundry facilities are available.”
